Civil War costs

 In 1879 the U.S. government released the official estimate of the cost of the Civil War as six billion one hundred ninety million dollars. That is one hundred forty- five billion eight hundred forty-one million nine hundred eighty-eight thousand five hundred forty- six dollars and thirteen cents in today's money. That's 2,256.1 percent increase in inflation since 1879. The Confederate side spent about half that amount. Over one million lives were lost total on both sides due to military engagements, naval battles, accidents, suicide's, sicknesses, murders, and executions. By 1905 another 3.3 billion dollars (87 billion 271 million 544 dollars, and 44 cents in today's money) was spent on pensions and other Federal benefits. Southern states and private philanthropy provided benefits to Confederate veterans. The amount spent on benefits eventually exceeded the cost of the war.

War is hell. Millions of you do not quite grasp this concept. We have been to hell, lived in hell, climbed out of hell, and don’t want to go back to hell. If you keep trampling on the peace we fought for, earned, and love, then when that first shot gets fired, you will force us back to hell; and we will show you the brutal realities of hell.

TODAY'S HISTORY LESSON: THE BLACK LAWN JOCKEY (footman).
These days people don't know the real meaning behind these statues, so they vandalize them, & THINK of them as racist, etc. The history of the black 'footman' with a lantern is the exact opposite. Its meaning signified that the home was a stop on the Underground Railroad. These were largely a northern thing, and weren't commonly found in the South until after WWII when northerners moved there and brought this custom with them. The clothing of the statue was also coded. A striped jockey's shirt meant that this was a place to swap horses, while a footman in a tailed coat meant overnight lodging and/or food, and a blue sailor's waist coat meant the homeowner could take you to a port and get you on a ship to Canada. Later, these came back into popularity after WWII, and they were again coded. Mostly to show that the white homeowners supported early civil rights efforts, and were NOT Klan members, etc. These statues are something we should be proud of because they led a lot of our ancestors to their freedom and they also represent the bravery and support of the homeowner's that risked their homes, themselves, & their families for the struggle of freedom and equality.

Why did we allow our Nation to be ripped apart by the Civil War? How could anyone, particularly Christians ever countenance slavery? How was it possible that someone didn’t come forth as a voice of reason? How could sectional rivalry, money, power and political gain get so out of control, that we ended up with the bloodiest war in our history? Were the people of that time stupid or something?

No, they weren’t. They were just like we are today.

That’s where it hit me…HARD.

They are us, we are them. We are engaged in the same kinds of behaviors they were, the ones that led to war.

Spend a few days watching cable news. Watch it from the time you get up to the time you go to bed… several days. Immerse yourself in it.

Then pick up a good book on the causes of the Civil War. Read what the politicians and the newspapers were saying; hear the volume of the rhetoric and see the stubborn way each side held on to its position. Notice the vitriol, notice the petty rivalries and the complete lack of statesmanship.

Then it will hit you too. What are we- stupid?

You might even want to undertake an honest study of the Book of Revelation, and if you do, you will discover that we aren’t stupid, we are just acting like people do when they leave God’s path, and that this cycle will never end until Jesus returns.
