Civil War costs

In 1879 the U.S. government released the official estimate of the cost of the Civil War as six billion one hundred ninety million dollars. That is one hundred forty- five billion eight hundred forty-one million nine hundred eighty-eight thousand five hundred forty- six dollars and thirteen cents in today's money. That's 2,256.1 percent increase in inflation since 1879. The Confederate side spent about half that amount. Over one million lives were lost total on both sides due to military engagements, naval battles, accidents, suicide's, sicknesses, murders, and executions. By 1905 another 3.3 billion dollars (87 billion 271 million 544 dollars, and 44 cents in today's money) was spent on pensions and other Federal benefits. Southern states and private philanthropy provided benefits to Confederate veterans. The amount spent on benefits eventually exceeded the cost of the war.

Patience

God placed difficult people in your life for a reason: For you to practice what you say you believe. Without obnoxious people, how would you practice patience? Without mean people, how could you develop unconditional love? Without those who needlessly wrong you, how would you master forgiveness?

A false religion

The most crucial problem with the Roman Catholic Church is its belief that faith alone in Christ is not sufficient for salvation. The Bible clearly and consistently states that receiving Jesus Christ as Savior, by grace through faith, grants salvation (John 1:123:16,18,36Acts 16:31Romans 10:9-10,13Ephesians 2:8-9). The Roman Catholic Church rejects this. The official position of the Roman Catholic Church is that a person must believe in Jesus Christ AND be baptized AND receive the Eucharist along with the other sacraments AND obey the decrees of the Roman Catholic Church AND perform meritorious works AND not die with any mortal sins AND etc., etc., etc. Catholic divergence from the Bible on this most crucial of issues, salvation, means that yes, Catholicism is a false religion. If a person believes what the Catholic Church officially teaches, he/she will not be saved. Any claim that works or rituals must be added to faith in order for salvation to be achieved is a claim that Jesus’ death was not sufficient to fully purchase our salvation.

Since the body cannot be separated from your self-being, How do you take care and respect it?

1 Corinthians 10:31(ESV) So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (ESV) Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, then God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.

1 Timothy 4:8 (ESV) For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

Proverbs 11:17 (ESV) A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself.

3 John 1:2 (ESV) Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.

The Bible does not tell us in so many words how to take care of ourselves but it assumes everyone will. Mark 31:12 tells us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. It commands husbands to love their wives as their own bodies (Ephesians (5:28-29).

Sevanthood

Romans 8:14 "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God they are the sons of God."

When God divinely clarifies Scripture to make it understandable to us and divinely enables us to obey Scripture. When the Spirit leads a person in these ways they can be assured God has adopted them into His family.

The Spirit within us makes us God's children.

All born-again Christians are God's servants. A servant is someone who carries out the will of another. A servant of the Lord is one who fulfills God's will. The Bible has a lot to say about servanthood.

John 1:18

"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love." - 1 John 4:18

When we experience God's love in our lives and share it with others, we do not need to fear. The future punishment that awaits those who do not believe does not concern the ""abiding"" believer. The two-way relationship of God's love in our lives gives us confidence and security. The ability to live out His love is a sign of our faith in Him, and the way for us to follow His will in order to gain eternal rewards.
Fear is associated with punishment. The believer has been fully forgiven of sins. The one who knows Christ in true fellowship lives for Him and does not need to fear future punishment. The person who experiences fear ""has not been perfected in love."" In other words, those who fear punishment don't have a complete or mature relationship with God. This certainly applies to unbelievers, but can also include believers who are not growing in Christ. It is the growing, maturing believer who can look forward to the future with joy rather than fear.

Sex

“Why would a God make sex pleasurable and part of human nature just to control and condemn it?”

Why would car makers put brakes and steering wheels in their cars and recommend that we use them? For those who can’t figure that out, it’s for our own good. If we want the pleasure of owning and driving a car, use the brakes and stay on the right side of the road.
God made the first couple naked and commanded them to have sex. That’s a little embarrassing, but it’s true. He also told us to use self-control and stay on the right side of the road. Sex is for one man and one woman, within the bounds of marriage…for the purpose of pleasure and to make more people.
If we violate the rules we will have guilt, STDs, unwanted pregnancies, abortions, superficial relationships, plus the really big negative—we will not enter the Kingdom of God (see 1 Corinthians 6:9-10).
So God doesn’t “control” or “condemn” sex. He says not to fornicate. If you don’t control your urge and fornicate, you become a fornicator and you condemn yourself to Hell.
So get saved, get married, and enjoy the glorious gift that God so graciously gave.

Judgement

There are people who want to remove the words male and female from the dictionary. The Bible says that God made us male and female. This whole thing goes back to one issue called rebellion against God and His established order. The Bible says it is appointed to man once to die and after this the judgment. God will hold us “all” accountable for how we live our lives, but God also sent us His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins. Through Jesus, we can receive God’s grace and forgiveness. The Bible says that “all” have sinned so unless we “all” turn to Jesus and place our faith in Him then we will not be forgiven and spend eternity in Hell. Gay, straight, homosexual, heterosexual, white or black we are all lost without Jesus and must pray to God and ask Jesus into our hearts and repent (turn) from our sins. We live in a world where Satan is trying to program our minds against God. Ephesians 6:10-18 tells us that we are in a spiritual battle. We need to open our eyes and realize Satan is our enemy and wants to turn us against God’s established order. Saying that your this or that does not excuse your sin. Creating laws to protect your rights does not excuse your sin. Man’s laws do not go above God’s rule. God will always be God and sin will always be sin no matter what we call it. God offers us forgiveness for our sins and calls us to repent and turn from our sin. We will be held accountable on judgment day and trusting Jesus as our Savior is God’s plan of forgiveness.

Battles of the Christian

Ephesians 6:12 (KJV) " For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places".

This verse describes the spiritual battle that takes place in the life of believers. Paul tells us our battle is spiritual not physical.

Mary worship

When Rome went from being pagan to Christian under Constantine, they had to find a replacement for the great mother of paganism. It was not until the time of Constantine that anyone began to look at Mary as a goddess. Since Mary was the mother of Jesus Christ, she was the most logical person to replace the pagan mother goddess. The pagans could continue their prayers and devotion to the mother goddess, only they would call her Mary. The pagans worshipped the mother as much or more than her son. True Christianity teaches that Jesus Christ is to be worshipped – not his mother. The fact remains that Jesus never hinted at the idea of Mary worship nor did any of the apostles.  Worshipping the mother goddess along with her child took place centuries before Jesus Christ was ever born in many different parts of the world. In 431 A.D. Mary worship became an official doctrine of the church in at the Council of Ephesus.

Roma 10:9

Saved

Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

This verse does not mean a simple acknowledgment that He is God and the Lord of the universe, since even demons acknowledge that to be true.

This is the deep personal conviction, without reservation, that Jesus is that person’s own master or sovereign. This phrase includes repenting from sin, trusting in Jesus for salvation and submitting to Him as Lord.

This is the volitional element of faith.

We studied this in the first chapter which I’ll repeat again here:

Believeth: To trust, rely on, or have faith in. When used of salvation, this word usually occurs in the present tense “is believing” which stresses that faith is not simply a one-time event, but an ongoing condition. True saving faith is supernatural, a gracious gift of God that He produces in the heart and is the only means by which a person can appropriate true righteousness.

Saving faith consists of 3 elements.

  1. Mental: the mind understands the gospel and the truth about Christ
  2. Emotional: one embraces the truthfulness of those facts with sorrow over sin and joy over God’s mercy and grace
  3. Volitional: the sinner submits his will to Christ and trust in Him alone as the only hope of salvation.

Genuine faith always produces authentic obedience.

“God hath raised Him from the dead”: Christ’s resurrection was the supreme validation of His ministry. Belief in it is necessary for salvation because it proved that Christ is who He claimed to be and that the Father had accepted His sacrifice in the place of sinners. Without the resurrection, there is no salvation.

This leaves absolutely no doubt at all what we must do to be saved.

Alcohol

Getting drunk is a sin, but what about drinking in moderation? Drinking alcohol has been the subject of debate within the church for centuries, but never more so than in recent years. With the shift toward postmodernism, practices the Christian community once discouraged that have been embraced and even promoted. The open consumption of alcohol is one of those practices. In Bible times, anyone set apart for God was to totally abstain from any fruit of the vine (Judges 13:4Leviticus 10:9Numbers 6:3Luke 1:15). The wine was often symbolic of worldly contamination, and those called into priestly service were to keep themselves from it. Such warnings have led many followers of Christ to forgo alcohol altogether, deeming any use of it unwise. Although drinking in moderation is not condemned in Scripture, there are many warnings about its destructive nature (Proverbs 20:131:4). So why does the Bible speak so strongly against becoming affected by alcohol?  Ephesians 5:18 holds the key: “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” Two elements are being compared: alcohol and the Holy Spirit. Each has the power to take control of a person’s mind and behavior—with vastly different results. Getting drunk leads to a loss of self-control; being filled with the Spirit leads to more self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). Both alcoholic spirits and the Holy Spirit can not control us at the same time. When we choose to ingest mind-altering substances, we are effectively choosing to give ourselves over to the control of something other than the Holy Spirit. Anything that takes control of our mind, will, and emotions is a false god. Any master we obey other than the Lord is an idol, and idolatry is sin (1 Corinthians 10:14).

Struggling with sin

Struggling with any sin is common among Christians (James 3:2; Romans 7:23; Romans 8:13; Galatians 5:17). The world, flesh, and the devil are our enemies. We live in the world and the flesh wants to do what the world does. The devil is everywhere. He is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour (1Peter 5:8).

The Bible says “through many tribulations, we must enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22).

Our struggle with sin is neverending. Although it can be painful, it is an indication that one is a child of God. If a person does not care about sin that is a very bad indicator.

Matthew 16:18 “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

“Upon this rock”: The word for “Peter”, “Petros, means a small stone (John 1:42). Jesus used a play on words here with petra which means a foundation boulder (7:24-25).

Since the New Testament makes it abundantly clear that Christ is both the foundation (Acts 4:11-12; 1 Cor. 3:11), and the head (Eph. 5:23), of the church, it is a mistake to think that here He is giving either of those roles to Peter. There is a sense in which the apostles played a foundational role in the building of the church (Eph. 2:20), but the role of primacy is reserved for Christ alone, not assigned to Peter.

So Jesus’ words here are best interpreted as a simple play on words in that a boulder-like truth came from the mouth of one who was called a small stone. Peter himself explains the imagery in his first epistle. The church is built of “living stones” (1 Peter 2:5), who, like Peter, confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Christ Himself is the “corner stone” (1 Pet. 2:6-7).

The word “church” is a translation of ekklesia, meaning “called out” or “assembly.” In the New Testament, it usually refers to a local group of Christians.

In this sense a church is an assembly of baptized believers under the discipline of the Word of God. They are organized to carry out the Great Commission, the administration of New Testament ordinances, and the exercise of spiritual gifts.

When a group of Christians today follows this example, it is a church in the biblical sense of the word. In the New Testament, Christians assembled as churches for fellowship, instruction, and worship and to carry out the Great Commission.

Perhaps the best-known New Testament churches were at Jerusalem, Antioch, Thessalonica, Philippi, Corinth, Ephesus, and the other six cities mentioned (in Revelation 2 and 3).

Every Christian should follow the example of New Testament believers by identifying with a local church, and getting involved in its ministry.

In this, Jesus was telling Peter that His church would be built on the foundational rock of truth, which had just issued from Peter’s mouth. All the blessed (believers in the Lord Jesus Christ), have this truth from the Father.

Jesus promises that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the church. The phrase “shall not prevail”, should be understood as meaning “shall not stand against.” The imagery would then picture the church as being on the offensive against the gates of hell.

While Jesus’ resurrection certainly will overcome the sting of death, it will also enable His church to aggressively and offensively attack the gates of hell (usage as Satan’s kingdom in Job 38:17; Isa. 38:10; Psalm 107:18); by snatching out victims from darkness into His glorious kingdom of light. The church is on the offensive here and hell is on the defensive.

Verses 19-20: The Lord promises to Peter and the other apostles “the keys of the kingdom.” This means that Peter will have the right to enter the kingdom himself, and preaching the gospel would be the means of opening the kingdom of heaven.

The Book of Acts shows us this process at work. By his sermon on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14-40), Peter opened the door of the kingdom for the first time. The expressions “bind” and “loose” were common in Jewish legal phraseology, meaning to declare forbidden or to declare allowed.

Peter and the other disciples (see 18:18), were to continue on earth the work of Christ in preaching the gospel and declaring God’s will to men, and were armed with the same authority He Himself possessed.

Gospels

The Gospels present four portraits of Jesus, each in its own characteristic manner. Matthew, the Hebrew tax collector, writes for the Hebrew mind. Mark, the travel companion of Paul and Peter, writes for the Roman mind. Luke, Paul’s physician-missionary, writes with the Greek mentality in view. John’s gospel is different by nature from the other three. It is an interpretation of the facts of Jesus’ life rather than a presentation of its facts in historical sequence.

Pandemic

🤔Where do pandemics start?
💡In places where people, livestock, and wildlife are brought closer together.
🌍In the tropics, trading and farming wild animals is common.
🦠️This increases the risk of disease spreading.
