On this day in 1871, a massive fire began in the Chicago barn of Patrick and Catherine O'Leary. The blaze lasted for two days and killed between 200 and 300 people. It destroyed 17,450 buildings, left 100,000 homeless, and caused an estimated $200 million (over $3 billion current) in damages.

Vietnam

July 26, 1950 - United States military involvement in Vietnam begins as President Harry Truman authorizes $15 million in military aid to the French. American military advisors will accompany the flow of U.S. tanks, planes, artillery, and other supplies to Vietnam.
