Should we be concerned what others think of us?

While it is important for our self-image to be likable, amenable and approachable by other people, if we are focused on pleasing others, it can be a ditch that we fall into. Jesus told us that if the world hates us we should know that it first hated Him (John 15:18). The word translated hate here means to, detest and to persecute. So as believers, we should expect there to be some animus from others based upon our testimony. And while real persecution is not something that we see against believers in our country, the Voice of the Martyrs reports that there is rampant persecution and hatred in the world at large against Christians with many losing their lives for their testimony. The old saying is beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people are going to like us and some may not. Living life to please others so that they like us is a slippery slope. For as God says in Amos 3:3, “Can two walk together except they be agreed.” It is impossible to please everyone and as believers, we certainly are not going to agree with the disagreeable who do not accept God’s viewpoint.

There is also the passage in Luke 6:26 that says when all speak well of us it is not such a good thing for the fathers also spoke well of false prophets. In other words, speaking well of us is relative, it is based upon the opinion of the one speaking and their opinion can perhaps be based on a faulty sense of who we are. The reality is we cannot make people like us or think well of us and we certainly cannot read another’s mind.

The idea here should be that if our heart is in a right relationship with God that it is His opinion of us that is the real issue. And since God sees the believer IN Christ (I Corinthians 1:30: Ephesians 1:3, 6) it is our spiritual position as a child of God that determines our standing before Him. Therefore, it is better to have God’s approval than to depend upon the goodwill of others. Not that it means we cannot be likable and approachable. It is just that as believers, it should not be our focus. Living our lives to glorify and please God will bring us the response from others; some will be positive and some negative.

Bible

We recently celebrated Easter as we remembered the death and resurrection of Jesus. After He arose He met with the disciples and gave them instructions to spread the message of His resurrection and what He taught. He wants those who know Him as their Savior to grow in their relationship with Him. He has instructed us to avoid sin and to not give in to Satan's temptations. Jesus wants us to live Holy lives. We will sin, but we confess our sin to Him and keep following Him. Our world today doesn't seem to understand repentance or want to repent of sin. Serious followers of Jesus understand that He wants us to turn away from sin, which is something we all struggle with. All of us. We are not defeated when we sin, because He has forgiven our sin, but we are defeated in our walk with Him if we don't turn from sin. That is a choice we have to make. Are we going to give in to the temptations of Satan and let him destroy our walk with God or are we going to turn away from his temptations and follow Jesus? In our walk with Jesus, we must spend time reading His Word, the Bible so that we can grow in our relationship with Him. The Word of God has transforming power to transform and strengthen us. The Word is the same now as it was 2000 years ago. It is alive and powerful. If you are going to follow Jesus then you need to know what He said and that's why we read the Bible. It's also one reason why we study the Bible in Church. The more we study the Bible the more we can apply what Jesus taught to our lives enabling us through the Word of God and the Holy Spirit to live victorious Christian lives. Jesus arose from the tomb and someday we will arise with Him forevermore.

Wife of thy youth

Proverbs 5:18 " Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth". This means to take another look at "the wife of your youth". You loved her then, love her now. The fountain is your wife. You are of one flesh with her. The wife of your youth is the girl you married while you were young. She is the girl you couldn't wait to tell your friends about.

Ecclesiastes 9:9 " Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labor which thou takest under the sun". Vanity means meaningless. It is our duty to love our wives, and enjoy our work. This is our portion in life. We are to make the best of it.
